QB: Justin Fields (PIT), ADP 208.5
The Steelers plan to sit Fields behind Russell Wilson to start the year. Wilson brings a veteran presence the team has lacked under center for a couple of seasons now. He was serviceable last season with 26 touchdowns, ranking 12th in fantasy points per game and 9th in fantasy points per drop back. But, it took him 2 seasons to adjust in Denver and the sample size is large enough that we may never see the old Russ again. He very well may struggle to acclimate.
So, it’s more likely than not we’ll see Fields out there this season. Fields has been top-10 in points per game for 2 straight seasons, and his rushing upside is elite. He was 1st in carries per game and 2nd in rushing yards per game for Chicago in 2023. He provides an extra dimension that Wilson can’t.
The cherry on top is the recent reports that Fields is turning in great practices with the team. It doesn’t seem like they’re ready to name him the starter yet, but the buzz is definitely out there. If Mike Tomlin’s plan works, and Fields can develop as a passer over the course of this season, they may have found their QB of the future.
As of now you can grab Fields off of waivers if and when he steps into the starting role. But, keep your eye on the story in case something happens sooner.
TE: Tyler Conklin (NYJ), ADP 160.0
Like Garrett Wilson, Tyler Conklin took a massive hit in reputation due to his team’s quarterbacks. The Jets had by far the worst passer rating in the NFL over the course of 2023. But, Conklin himself didn’t have such a bad season.
He actually achieved career highs in receptions (61), and yards (621) with the league’s 7th-highest air yard share (14.9%), and the 6th-most deep targets (7). But despite the decent opportunity numbers, and the 9 red zone targets, Conklin failed to score a touchdown for the first time since 2019. There just weren’t many to go around: Jets QBs only threw 11 scores.
So, Aaron Rodgers, who threw 26 touchdowns in his last healthy season with Green Bay, should automatically provide a higher floor for Conklin. He projects as the 3rd target on a talented-looking squad. So, his 13th-round ADP is well worth it for a shot at a breakout.
WR: Curtis Samuel (BUF), ADP 88.7
Samuel’s best statistical season came during the 2022 COVID season. That year he was a high-end WR3, finishing 27th in fantasy points per game. That year he had 77 receptions for 851 yards, and added 200 more rushing for the Carolina Panthers.
But, Samuel’s QBs that year were Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker. He was buried behind D.J. Moore and Robbie Chosen on that depth chart. Since then, he’s played 3 years in Washington, catching passes from a combination of Taylor Heinicke, Carson Wentz, and Sam Howell. It’s like he’s been stuck in WR purgatory.
So, he’s now with the Buffalo Bills. His offensive coordinator from 2020, Joe Brady, is there. Josh Allen should be the best QB he’s played with in his entire career. And the Bills just saw their top-2 receivers leave town. So, at 28 years old, Samuel should be able to find something in his tank and make some noise with the Bills.
RB: Kimani Vidal (LAC), ADP 156.5
Vidal was a dual threat at Troy for 4 straight seasons. He racked up over 4,000 rushing yards and 700 receiving yards to go along with his 34 career touchdowns. At first glance, the 6th-rounder seems like a project for the Chargers to develop. But, there’s a real shot he gets to step in this season.
We know Jim Harbaugh likes to run the football. His top-2 guys are a couple of former Ravens who have each suffered significant injuries and inconsistent stretches in their careers. Neither of them have every finished better than RB29 in fantasy points per game. Part of Vidal’s scouting report is that he has a strong, durable frame that will withstand a lot of work.
So, the situation might just be right for Vidal to step in at some point and make some noise in fantasy football. Knowing about him early will give you and edge over your buddies.
