Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville Jaguars (-4.5)
This is an unorthodox pick for game of the week, since we have a team who just lost their starting QB, but it isn’t the worst situation from a fantasy perspective since the Colts’ Gardner Minshew has had success in the league. These teams can still get it done.
Fantasy Life’s Game Hub for this one shows some favorable matchups for the Jaguars, particularly when it comes to moving the football and putting pressure on the Colts’ QB.
Rich Hribar (@LordReebs) and I broke down this game from a fantasy standpoint on YouTube. Here are all the players we discussed and what you need to know going in.
QB: Trevor Lawrence (JAX)
TLaw is coming off of his best performance of the season across the pond. In addition to the signs that his offense is starting to heat up, the matchup looks good for Lawrence this week.
In his last 3 matchups vs. the Colts, Lawrence has been a fantasy QB1. He’s completed 82% of his passes with 5 TDs and just 1 INT.
Additionally, the Colts are super-passive, and sit back in a lot of soft zone looks. They are:
28th in blitz rate
25th in pressure rate
Lowest percentage of man coverage in the NFL
It all points to a big game for Lawrence.
WR: Calvin Ridley (JAX)
SIGNAL ALERT!
Opposing WR1s have absolutely FEASTED vs. Indianapolis. Additionally, Ridley goes off when he faces cover-3 looks, which is the Colts’ preferred defense over 60% of the time.
Against such looks, Ridley is targeted on 25.3% of his routes with 2.7 yards per route run. When these two teams faced off in Week 1, Ridley had 8 catches for 100 yards and a TD. It’s looking strong again.
RB: Travis Etienne (JAX)
ETN’s usage has been phenomenal, and it led to the overall RB1 performance in Week 5. The only problem was that he wasn’t getting the goal line touches, but even that seems to have changed as he got two goal-to-go carries last week.
As it stands, ETN has 82% of the Jaguars’ backfield touches, and his receiving work is way up this year. He’s got 3.6 catches per game after averaging just 2.1 for all of ‘22.
Fantasy Life’s utilization report gets into the real numbers on ETN’s backfield share numbers.
WR: Michael Pittman (IND)
Pittman’s a reliable play most weeks, and if you own him in season-long he’s probably already locked into your lineup. With Gardner Minshew under center, Pittman leads the team with 30.4% of targets.
The star power is still there.
WR: Josh Downs (IND)
However, if you’re talking DFS and you want a salary discount, Downs becomes very intriguing this week. He gets the biggest bump with Minshew:
Targeted on 26.7% of his routes with Minshew
Targeted on 16.7% of his routes without Minshew
He has 14 receptions on 20 targets with him as the QB. It’s a nice little spot for him here, and maybe going forward all year.
RB: Jonathan Taylor/Zack Moss (IND)
If you can tell me what’s going to happen in this backfield, please shoot me an email. We knew JT was going to have a ramp-up period after getting the contract extension, but Moss has been legitimately great. Is he forcing the coaching staff’s hand?
I’m staying away in DFS until we get more information.
