New Orleans Saints at Indianapolis Colts (+1)
As always, Rich Hribar (@LordReebs) and I took the time to discuss our pick for game of the week on YouTube. This week we’re looking at New Orleans and Indianapolis, which has some solid fantasy players according to the preview from Matthew Berry’s Fantasy Life, and their game hub.
This is a game where Reebs and I both like the pace, and as a bonus we get to feature the Colts. They are uniquely suited to these kinds of stack games because they play fast, they run a ton of plays, they have a bit of a streaky QB, and their defense is pretty generous to the opposition. It should mean we get some solid production in this one.
In fact, Colts games are averaging 137.1 combined plays per game along with 52.7 combined points per game. Both are league highs.
Both teams also have some fun players who have potential to boost our lineups and provide nice returns on our betting investments. Let’s get into the players to watch in this one.
RB: Jonathan Taylor (IND)
Even though Zack Moss has earned his share of the work out of the Colts’ backfield, the team runs so many plays that both guys can flirt with 20 touches each week. In Week 7, Taylor had 21 and Moss had 19.
Moss is currently dealing with some nagging injuries that kept him out of practice midweek, but he returned to the field Thursday. Time will tell if this affects his playing time, but if so, Taylor would get a boost.
Either way, JT’s passing game usage has ticked up recently, so he’s an intriguing play regardless.
QB: Gardner Minshew (IND)
Minshew was overlooked last week against the tough Browns defense but ended up as QB3. What people didn’t account for was the boost he usually gets when he plays against man coverage.
Minshew vs. Man:
4 TDs, 1 INT
9th in QB rating
8.9 yards per pass attempt (4th)
65% completion percentage (8th)
Sacked on just 3.4% of dropbacks (4th lowest)
So what is comes down to is that Minshew is at his best when his guys are manned up. Well, the Browns are 1st in rate of man coverage, and the Saints are 4th. The matchup looks eerily similar to Week 7.
WR: Josh Downs (IND)
Where Michael Pittman sort of has a difficult matchup against New Orleans, Downs may be set up for another big day.
Against man coverage, he’s been targeted on 23% of his routes and leads the team in targets per route run at 25%. He also runs about 76% of his routes from the slot, where the Saints allow the 4th-most yards per target.
WR: Chris Olave (NO)
If you read my Friday morning edition, you know I’m sensing big things for Olave this week. No team runs more cover-3 than the Indianapolis Colts, and Olave eats that for lunch. Against such looks, he leads the Saints in targets, air yards, and yards per route run.
One of the best stats though is that Derek Carr’s targets to Olave vs. cover-3 are twice as accurate as they are against all other looks. Combined with the fact that the Colts are 24th in fantasy points allowed to WR1s, and we’re cooking with gas here.
RB: Alvin Kamara (NO)
Since Kamara returned to the Saints a few weeks ago, he leads all running backs in targets, receptions, and receiving yards. Only Tyreek Hill has a higher target percentage and only Travis Kelce has more receptions. That’s crazy to think about.
The Colts are sort of meh in terms of allowing receiving points to opposing RBs, so the chance is here for Alvin to keep the juice flowing.
A quick look at Fantasy Life’s Defense vs. Position tool shows that the Colts are 28th in fantasy points allowed to RBs.
Savor Sunday, fans! We’re creeping up on the halfway point.
