LA Chargers @ Minnesota Vikings (-1)

I’m excited for this one for obvious reasons. The O/U is 54, and both of these offenses have shown explosive, big-play ability. The fact that they are both sitting at 0-2 is a bummer for their fans, but a big boost for us. We know they’ll be going all out for the win.

Fantasy Life’s game hub for this one shows some incredible potential for offensive fireworks when both teams have the ball:

Rich Hribar (@LordReebs) and I broke down this game from a fantasy standpoint on YouTube. Here are all the players we discussed and what you need to know going in.

QB: Kirk Cousins (MIN)

The people of Minnesota absolutely LOVE Captain Kirk. Will that change if the team falls to 0-3?

That’s yet to be seen, but Cousins has an opportunity to continue to build up his stats this week against the Chargers’ pass defense, who is:

• 27th in 20+ yard receptions allowed

• 32nd in 30+ yard receptions allowed

• 29th in 40+ yard receptions allowed

• 32nd in yards allowed per pass attempt

So it’s the vertical passing game that’s really killing the Chargers so far. To Kirk’s credit, he’s already thrown for 344 and 364 yards this year. I see no reason to think that won’t continue.

WR: Justin Jefferson (MIN)

Seriously, this Vikings team has had a tough time running the football with Alexander Mattison, and Cam Akers probably won’t be ready to take on a huge role this week. So those struggles will probably continue.

Jefferson is the league’s yardage leader with 309 on 20 catches, making his average almost 15.5 yards per reception. The way the Chargers have played, he could be in line for a big week.

For the DFS crowd, fitting him in might be a little expensive, but sometimes you gotta pay up for the chalk.

WR: Keenan Allen (LAC)

Allen’s been a big-time playmaker for years now, but the fun thing about him this year is how the Chargers have used him. He’s lining up all over their formations and getting usage that Reebs likens to CeeDee Lamb.

He’s getting deeper targets than last season. So far, 16% of his routes have been more than 20 yards downfield. That’s up from 7.5% in ‘22.

Another tick in the positive column is that Allen is a zone-beater, which the Vikings prefer to play under Brian Flores.

RB: Josh Kelley (LAC)

Fantasy Twitter is mad at him this week. I’m partly to blame. I pumped this guy’s tires all Sunday morning only to have him fail to surpass 40 rushing yards against the Titans’ front.

The Vikings will likely play a good amount of shell coverage to prevent Justin Herbert from beating them deep. The scheme has allowed RBs to find success against them so far, as they’re 31st in success rate vs. RB carries.

WR: Mike Williams (LAC)

Big Mike has been used differently under Kellen Moore, sort of the inverse of Allen. He’s lined up more in the slot, allowing him to use his skillset in new and creative ways.

In Week 2, he was targeted on 32% of his routes vs. zone coverage. It was the 6th-highest rate in the league. So again, with Flores expected to play a lot of zone, Williams is solidly in play for DFS purposes.

WR: Jordan Addison (MIN)

The usage hasn’t been quite where we’d like it for Addison. He’s run a route on just 66% and 78% of team drop backs in the first two games.

However, the team has designed plays for him, and he’s been hitting on some big ones. Again, the Chargers have been allowing those big plays down the field, so if you’re using Addison this week, that’s where you’re putting your hopes.

Plus, K.J. Osborn just hasn’t been very efficient. He’s only averaging 0.74 yards per route run on the season so far.

A quick peek at the Defense vs. Position tool from Fantasy Life shows just how many fantasy points the Chargers have allowed to the WR position. Addison is the no. 2 behind Jefferson, so there’s production to be had.

TE: T.J. Hockenson (MIN)

No, the efficiency hasn’t been there. Hock’s only averaging 5.9 yards per target and about 6 yards per reception.

But that doesn’t matter when you’re getting 8 targets per week, especially at this position. We knew going into the year Hock’s value would be tied to his volume. That’s played out so far. When your team has to throw on basically every down, then you’ll probably see enough to produce.

• Dallas Goedert MORE THAN 38.5 receiving yards: The Bucs are allowing the 13th-most receiving yards to TEs this season, and they weren’t very good against the position in ‘22.

• George Pickens MORE THAN 50.5 receiving yards: Diontae Johnson is still out, meaning Pickens should continue to garner a high target share. He had 9 last week, and turned it into 127 yards.

• Joe Mixon MORE THAN 60.5 rush yards: If Joe Burrow can’t play, Mixon is going to get loads of touches this week. The Rams have allowed the 7th-most explosive plays.

• Mike Evans MORE THAN 54.5 receiving yards: Evans and Baker Mayfield are clicking, as he has a 25% target share and a 48.7% air yards share.

• Jakobi Meyers MORE THAN 49.5 receiving yards: The latest is that Meyers is going to play, and he had a great Week 1, with 9 receptions for 81 yards.
