Seattle Seahawks at Detroit Lions (-5.5)

This game should be fun. The O/U is 47.5, which is 2nd highest on the main slate, and when these two teams faced off last year they set off straight fireworks. The final score of that game was 48-45. So right off the bat we have the potential for big offense.

Yes, Seattle ran into some real trouble last week. A banged up offensive line led to a catastrophic second half, during which the team only ran 14 offensive plays and gained 12 yards, 9 of which came on the final play of the game.

Even on Fantasy Life’s game hub, we’re seeing a very favorable matchup for the Lions:

So, this is a game with some intrigue and fun matchups. Let’s get into some of the key players for season-long fantasy as well as DFS.

QB: Jared Goff (DET)

Goff has been predictably more productive at home than on the road. Against Seattle, he has a shot to take advantage of a weak pass rush and a vulnerable middle of the field.

Matthew Stafford carved it up between the numbers in Week 1, completing 16 passes for 172 yards in that part of the field alone.

Goff went absolutely nuts against this team in 2022. He threw for 378 yards and 4 TDs to 1 INT, and had 33 fantasy points. He’s hoping the matchup looks similar in the game today.

QB: Geno Smith (SEA)

Geno had an incredible revival season in ‘22, but seemed to slam into a wall last week. The offensive line has real question marks. They allowed pressure on 42% of the snaps when ALL the starters were on the field. Then both starting tackles went out and it got worse; they allowed pressure on 50% of the snaps after that point.

Geno did have an effective game in this matchup last year, so if the Seahawks can give him an opportunity with protection, he may be able to do something with it.

WR: Amon-Ra St. Brown (DET)

Amon-Ra really makes his bacon in the middle of the field, where Seattle is weakest on defense. He ran routes on 100% of the Lions’ pass plays last week, scored the first NFL TD of the season, and really balled out between the numbers. He lined up both outside AND in the slot. It might not matter where they put him today, he’s breaking big.

RB: Kenneth Walker (SEA)

Walker proved it was his backfield last week. He played 63% of snaps and took 73% of his team’s touches despite popping up on last Friday’s injury report. That’s good news if you own him.

As a bonus he also saw a 20.8% target share, which was the 2nd-highest rate of his career in a single game. For DFS purposes, his price is excellent for that kind of usage.

RB: Jahmyr Gibbs (DET)

Gibbs definitely flashed that he has the goods last week. Sometimes it looks like he’s playing at a totally different speed than anyone else. The burst and ability to get around the edge of the defense already looks like it could be elite for the rookie.

The big question is whether or not he’ll get the proper volume.

RB: David Montgomery (DET)

The coaches seem hellbent on using Montgomery as the closer and the pass protection RB. He’s a vet, but anyone with eyes can see that he doesn’t have the same kind of speed or burst as Gibbs.

We aren’t really sure how the usage balance is going to shake out as the season goes on, but Monty had 21 carries to Gibbs’s 7, and he’s dirt cheap in DFS for that kind of usage.

So, it could end up being a nice play.

WR: DK Metcalf (SEA)

The entire fantasy football community has struggled with the Seahawk WR trio all summer. Who would emerge? Which would be the most productive?

At this point, we’re sticking with Metcalf. He had his season-high yardage total in last season’s matchup with Detroit, and he absolutely feasts when he plays man coverage, which the Lions love to do.

Against man, he gets targeted on 31.5% of his routes compared to 21.5% against zone.

Plus, his usage in Week 1 was higher than his 2 WR teammates, according to the usage chart from Fantasy Life:

• Tyreek Hill MORE THAN 17.0 fantasy points: He’s terrific against man coverage, as he showed last week, and the Pats play it at a high rate.

• Jamaal Williams MORE THAN 52.5 rush yards: He played 75% of the snaps and had 20 touches last week. Good volume for a guy about to face a team who let up 130 rush yards last week.

• Miles Sanders MORE THAN 60.5 rush yards: New Orleans let up a lot of yards to RBs last weekend, and Sanders is the lead back for Carolina. He got 22 touches.

• Nick Chubb MORE THAN 0.5 rush+pass+reception TD: The Cleveland bell cow has a nose for the end zone even though he didn’t find it last week. He scored 13 times last year.

• Rashid Shaheed MORE THAN 36.5 receiving yards: He had an 18.2% target share and a 24.4% air yard share in Week 1.
